1998 Salmonella Typhi Linked to Mamey Fruit Juice
An outbreak of Salmonella Typhi occurred in Florida and was linked to the consumption of fruit shakes (batidos) made with frozen, mamey fruit. Mamey is a tropical fruit that is popular in Central America. The fruit had been commercially processed, frozen, and distributed to the United States from Guatemala and Honduras. Coco, S.A., a Guatemalan firm, was the manufacturer. Laboratory testing showed that product samples of the fruit were heavily contaminated with fecal coliforms, however Salmonella Typhi was never detected.
