1999 Outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo at a Restaurant, Minnesota

On July 1, an employee of a Minneapolis restaurant was positive for Salmonella Montevideo, and the restaurant manager was notified. The manager stated that there were no other employees with any symptoms and that there had been no customer complaints. The following day, the Minnesota Department of Environmental Health was notified of another case of Salmonella Montevideo in patron of the restaurant. Subsequent interviews of restaurant employees confirmed additional illnesses in the employee group with onsets ranging from June 7 through July 2. Nine of 39 employees (23%) tested positive for Salmonella Montevideo. All isolates were genetic matches to one another. No critical foodhandling violations were identified upon inspection. Sanitarians were concerned about the small size of the kitchen preparation and utensil washing areas; this might lead to cross-contamination of food or equipment. Environmental samples tested negative for Salmonella. All employees who tested positive had also eaten frequently at the restaurant prior to their illness onsets. No food vehicle was identified.
