2004 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup Linked to Roma Tomatoes

An outbreak of illnesses attributed to Salmonella Braenderup was detected in the summer of 2004. Cases were more likely than controls to have eaten out several times A higher proportion of ill persons than controls ate cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes outside the home, but these differences were not statistically significant. Using the information about the meals that were eaten, restaurant managers were asked about the specific types of cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes that were used in dishes eaten by the ill customers. Roma tomatoes were the only exposure that was found statistically associated with illness. The involved restaurants had purchased the roma tomatoes whole from tomato distributors. The distributors had purchased the tomatoes from a single packing house.
