2005 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup Linked to Roma Tomatoes
Raw, pre-diced Roma tomatoes were implicated in a multistate outbreak. Twenty of the cases had eaten tomatoes at a chain restaurant. The tomatoes had been grown in one of two tomato fields in Florida and were pre-diced and packaged at a firm in Kentucky before they were shipped to the restaurant. The environmental investigation of the fields revealed the potential for contamination from numerous animals. Sampling of animal feces, farm surfaces, and ditch water yielded Salmonella different from the outbreak strain.
