2007 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Litchfield Linked to an Atlantic City (NJ) Hotel Restaurant

Initially eleven cases of Salmonella Litchfield, a rare strain of Salmonella, were identified in five states during a five week time period through the Centers for Disease Control and Protection PulseNet system. Seven of the eleven cases had reported recent travel to Atlantic City. New Jersey health officials investigated and implicated a hotel restaurant in Atlantic City. Ultimately there were thirty confirmed or probable cases associated with the hotel restaurant. These persons were from eight states and included ten restaurant food handlers. Investigators concluded that the hotel restaurant outbreak most likely was associated with fruit salad, particularly the honeydew melon components, and that contamination likely resulted from infected food handlers. Green salad was also implicated. Recurrent contamination seemed likely as a source of infections for restuarant patrons as so many food handlers were infected; all infected workers had worked throughout the time that they were infectious. The outbreak continued for six weeks before it was detected epidemiologically.
