2010 Outbreak of Shigellosis at Subway, Lombard, Illinois

An outbreak of Shigella sonnei was linked to eating at the Subway Restaurant in Lombard, Illinois (DuPage County). Two restaurant employees tested positive for the same strain of Shigella that caused the outbreak. The employees had been ill with gastrointestinal symptoms prior to the beginning of the outbreak. Poor hygienic practices caused widespread contamination of restaurant food.
