2012 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly Linked to Consumption of Moon Marine USA Corporation Raw Yellowfin Tuna

In April 2012 the CDC and FDA announced a multi-state outbreak of salmonellosis linked to consumption of frozen raw yellowfin tuna product known as Nakaochi Scrape distributed by Moon Marine USA Corporation. Scrape is tuna backmeat that is scraped from the bones of tuna and may be used in sushi, sashimi, ceviche, and similar dishes. At least 7 clusters of illnesses were identified at restaurants or grocery stores. The outbreak included cases of Salmonella serotype Bareilly and Salmonella serotype Nchanga. On April 13, the FDA issued a press release that yellowfin tuna product, labeled as Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA was being recalled and had been associated with this outbreak. FDA laboratories identified Salmonella in two samples of Nakaochi scrape yellowfin tuna with a PFGE pattern indistinguishable from the Salmonella Bareillly strain ssociated with this outbreak. One of the samples also yielded Salmonella Nchanga with a PFGE pattern indistinguishable from a cluster of patients. Declaring the outbreak over on July 26, 2012, the CDC counted 425 individuals infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Bareilly (n=410) or Salmonella Nchanga (n=15)reported in 28 states and the District of Columbia. Among 425 persons for whom information was available, illness onset dates ranged from January 1, 2012 to July 7, 2012. Ill persons ranged in age from <1 to 86 years, with a median age of 30. Sixty percent of the patients were female. Among 326 persons with available information, 55 (17%) reported being hospitalized. No deaths were reported.
