2012 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup linked to Daniella brand mangoes, US and Canada
On August 24, 2012 public health investigators in Canada announced an outbreak of Salmonella serotype Braenderup associated with consumption of Daniella brand mangoes. Canadian investigators reported 17 case patients in British Columbia and 5 cases in Alberta. Illnesses were associated with consumption of Daniella brand mangoes sold between July 12 and August 24, 2012. In late August 2012, the CDC announced that outbreak associated cases of S. Braenderup were also being identified in the US. In the Final Update published on October 11, 2012, the CDC reported 127 outbreak associated cases with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Braenderup. These patients lived in 15 states. Thirty three patients were hospitalized. There were no deaths. Illness onset dates ranged from July 3, 2012 to September 1, 2012. The US Food and Drug Administration issued recalls of Daniella-brand mangoes and products containing Daniella-brand mangoes beginning on August 27. The recalled mangoes were packed in Mexico and distributed by Splendid Products in Burlingame, California. These mangoes were sold between July 12, 2012 and August 29, 2012 at various stores throughout the United States. The mangoes were sold as individual fruit with the sticker brand "Daniella." Each fruit was also marked with a small sticker with one of the following codes: 4051, 4959, 4311, 4584, or 3114. In addition to whole mangoes, products containing mangoes such as pineapple/mango pico de gallo were also recalled. The FDA warned consumers against eating mangoes from Agricola Daniella, a mango supplier with multiple plantations and a single packing house located in Sinaloa, Mexico. The FDA isolated Salmonella in mangoes from this producer. CDC Outbreak ID# 1208CAJBP-1
