2012 Outbreak of Campylobacter Associated with a Private Party, Minnesota

Eight people who attended a private party in Plymouth, Minnesota on July 14, 2012 became ill with Campylobacter jejuni infections. Two cases tested positive for Campylobacter jejuni subtype CMPC5 (Minnesota designation). A wide variety of homemade and pre-packaged foods were served at the party. Pre-packaged pulled pork purchased from a meat packing vendor was served but the host declined to provide information for the vendor. Both cases and controls consumed a wide variety of foods. The small number of non-ill controls prevented a meaningful statistical analysis of specific food items. In addition to the foods consumed at the party, the host had a swimming pool. He reported that approximately one-half of the party with swimming. However, only one case reported swimming. Public health investigators concluded this was a foodborne outbreak associated with a private party. The vehicle of transmission was not identified. The outbreak most likely resulted from improper cooking or cross contamination of a high risk food such as chicken.
