2012 Outbreak of Cryptosporidosis Associated with Hotel Waterpark, Baxter, Minnesota

In March 2012 Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) staff investigated an outbreak of Cryptosporidium infections among users of a waterpark located in Baxter, Minnesota. Illness histories and exposure information was obtained from 118 waterpark guests. Forty-three (36%) cases were identified. One waterpark guest submitted a stool sample to the MDH Public Health Laboratory. The specimen was positive for Cryptosporidium parvum subtype BGP4. Of the 42 cases with known information, 9 visited a healthcare provider. One case was hospitalized for 3 days. The waterpark voluntarily closed in order to be superchlorinated at 20 parts per million for 12.5 hours, the necessary chlorine level and time needed to inactivate Cryptosporidium. The original source of contamination was not identified and MDH officials theorized that an infectious waterpark user most likely introduced the parasite into the park.
