2012 Outbreak of Salmonella at a school in Ottawa, Canada

A Salmonella outbreak in Ottawa, Canada, sickened at least 40 children and 10 adults. At least three children were hospitalized. The illnesses were connected with eating at the following schools and daycare programs: Tiny Hoppers Day Care; Steve MacLean Public School; Turnbull Private School; École Jean-Paul-II; Stittsville Public School; W. O. Mitchell Elementary School; Bayview Public School; Ecole élémentaire publique Des Sentiers; St. James Catholic School; St. Gregory Catholic School; St. Jerome Catholic School; St. Andrew Catholic School; Castlefrank Elementary School; Merivale High School. All locations had served food prepared by a single franchise of The Lunch Lady. The Lunch Lady, a caterer, delivered hot meals to the schools and the day care program. The Lunch Lady had three franchises in Ottawa. The health department focused on the franchise on Boyd Avenue, near Carling and Clyde. On March 14, it was announced that the catering firm was dropping tacos and meat lasagna from the menu after these items had been identified as possible vehicle sources. On March 26, it was announced that Salmonella Typhimurium had been isolated from a frozen, uncooked ground beef sample collected on March 13, and Salmonella Heidelberg had been isolated from raw Halal chicken sampled on March 15. On March 27, it was announced that an employee(The Lunch Lady) had been fired for not following safe food handling guidelines. The outbreak was traced to ground beef used in the meals. On April 6, the Canadian Food Inspection Service issued an alert about a recall of beef produced by Intercity Packers Ltd, but did not specifically indicate that the beef was linked to the outbreak. By April 8, the Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed that the contaminated beef had been produced by Intercity Packers(East) Ltd. The meat was an 80/20 beef burger meat mix. The meat had been sold in 5 kg cases; the chubs inside the cases did not carry a label. The product had been distributed to the public and to commercial food establishments in Ontario and Newfoundland and possibly to retailers in Newfoundland.
