2012 Outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo at Denny's Restaurant, Minnesota

Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) officials investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo linked to a Denny's restaurant located in Rochester, Minnesota. Patrons who ate at the restaurant between June 28 and July 2 were identified using credit card receipts, and were contacted and interviewed about food consumption and illness history by MDH staff. Stool samples were collected from consenting patrons and submitted to the MDH Public Health Laboratory for testing. Overall 24 people were interviewed as part of the investigation. Eleven cases were identified. Of those 10 were laboratory confirmed. All but one of the cases reported eating at the restaurant prior to onset of illness. Four of the patients were hospitalized. None died. One secondary case was identified in a household member and dining companion of a confirmed case. Genetic testing by PFGE revealed that all confirmed cases were infected with strain SMON93SMB4 (Minnesota designation). Olmsted County Public Health Services (OCPHS) Environmental health Specialists conducted an onsite visit to the restaurant on July 11 to evaluate food preparation and handling procedures. Observations made during the visit included a potential for cross contamination on the cook line due to inadequate glove changes and inadequate handwashing after handling raw meat and shell eggs. Fifty employees were interviewed. Seven employees reported experiencing diarrhea with onsets ranging from June 30 through July 12. Two of 48 stool samples collected from employees were positive for Salmonella. One was from an employee who experienced onset on June 30 and worked while ill for 2 days. The other positive stool came from an employee who was asymptomatic.
