2012 Outbreak of Salmonella Newport At a Wedding Reception, Corcoran, Minnesota

In July 2012 Minnesota Department of Health staff investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Newport among attendees at a wedding reception held at a private home on June 23. The investigation was triggered by routine surveillance of three individuals diagnosed with Salmonella Newport. All three shared an indistinguishable PFGE pattern, JJPX01.0884. Initial interviews revealed that all three had attended the wedding held in Corcoran, Minnesota. Approximately 250 people attended the wedding reception. The bride and family of the couple provided information about foods served at the wedding but refused to provide contact information for attendees. MDH interviewed 14 guests. Seven meet the case definition. Four cases visited a healthcare provider. None were hospitalized. Two additional cases submitted stool samples to the MDH Public Health Laboratory. One tested positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport. The other sample was negative but it was collected 23 days after symptom onset. Wedding reception foods were served buffet-style at a private home. A family member who was not ill prepared a red spaghetti sauce with pepperoni and Italian sausage in her home. The cake was purchased at a grocery store. All other foods were prepared by a friend of the bride who was a chef at a local restaurant. The small number of cases and controls limited the power of the statistical analysis. In a univariate analysis, consuming chicken alfredo (7 of 7 cases vs. 3 of 6 controls; p=0.07) approached significance. Investigators concluded this was a foodborne outbreak of Salmonella Newport associated with a privately catered wedding. The suspected outbreak vehicle was chicken alfredo prepared by a friend of the bride. However, this was not confirmed. Five other cases were identified with the outbreak strain (3 in Minnesota and 2 in another state) but none attended the wedding and no commonalities were identified.
