2013-2014 Multistate Outbreak of Listeriosis Linked to Soft Cheese Produced by Roos Foods

In February 2014 the CDC announced a multi-state outbreak of listeriosis linked to consumption of soft or semi-soft Hispanic-style cheese produced by Roos Foods of Kenton, Delaware. There were 8 confirmed cases in two states, Maryland and California. Among persons for whom information was available, dates that illness was diagnosed ranged from August 1, 2013 to November 27, 2013. Seven of the 8 were hospitalized. Five of the illnesses (2 mother-newborn pairs and a newborn) were related to pregnancy. There was one death. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) reported that Listeria monocytogenes had been found in cheese products manufactured by Roos Foods. The VDACS isolated the outbreak strain in a sample of Cuajada en Terron collected at Mega Mart. Other branded names include Santa Rosa de Lima, Amigo, Mexicana Suyapa, La Chapina, and La Purisima Crema Nica.
