2013 Campylobacter Outbreak Associated with Consumption of Raw Milk, Alaska

In February 2013 the Alaska Division of Public Health announced an outbreak of Campylobacter coli (C. coli) linked to consumption of raw (unpasteurized) milk distributed by Kasilof Dairy, a Kenai-based cow-share program. In total 31 cases were identified in the outbreak. Ill persons ranged in age from 7 months to 72 years. Onsets ranged from January 8 to February 13. Three children and one adult developed reactive arthritis lasting a minimum of 6 weeks. Two persons were hospitalized. All ill persons were Kenai Peninsula residents who either personally consumed raw milk from Kasilof Dairy within 10 days of illness onset (n=29) or met the secondary case definition (n=2). Public health investigators collected cow feces, milk and other environmental samples from Kasilof Dairy. The outbreak strain of C. coli was not isolated from the samples collected at the farm; however, three different strains of C. jejuni were isolated form cow manure, and Listeria monocytogenes gree from a raw milk sample.
