2013 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Illnesses Linked to Krinos Brand Tahini

On May 22, 2013 the CDC announced a multistate outbreak of Salmonella linked to consumption of Krinos brand tahini sauce. On June 21, 2013 the outbreak was declared to be over. A total of 16 ill persons infected with two outbreak strains - Salmonella Montevideo (4 persons) and Salmonella Mbandaka (12 persons) were reported from 9 states - California (1), Georgia (1), Iowa (1), Louisiana (1), Minnesota (2), New York (1), North Dakota (1), Texas (7), and Wisconsin (1). Among persons for whom information was available, illness onset dates ranged from February 19, 2013 to May 25, 2013. Among 7 ill persons with available information, one person was hospitalized and died. Salmonella infection was not considered a contributing factor in this person's death. Collaborative investigation efforts by state, local and federal public health and regulatory agencies implicated tahini sesame paste distributed by Krinos Foods, LLC of Long Island City, New York as the likely source of this outbreak. During routine product testing at a retail store, the Michigan Department of Agriculture isolated Salmonella Montevideo from Krinos brand tahini sesame paste. The US FDA isolated Salmonella Mbandaka from imported tahini sesame paste collected from shipments arriving in the US for distribution by Krinos Foods.
