2013 Norovirus Associated with a Restaurant in New Brighton, Minnesota

In April 2013 Minnesota public health officials investigated an outbreak of norovirus associated with a restaurant located in New Brighton, Minnesota. Initial reports came from three different dining parties who had eaten at the restaurant on April 22. Ten patrons, all from the three original complaint parties were interviewed. Seven met the case definition. No cases visted a medical provider or were hospitalized. A stool specimen collected from one case tested positive for norovirus GI. The restaurant had a Monday taco special and all patrons reported eating tacos, chips, and salsa. Due to the limited number of controls and all patrons eating the same food items, statistical analyses were not conducted. Illness histories and job duty information were obtained from 31 restaurant employees. One employee, a server, reported developing diarrhea and stomach cramps on April 22 (within 3 hours of the complainant meals). The server also reported having diarrhea the week prior and said she worked while ill. She reported serving chips and salsa to the tables and scooped the chips into baskets using her bare-hands on April 22. No other employees reported having had gastrointestinal illness prior to, or after, the complainants meal date.
