2013 Outbreak of Norovirus, November, Hennepin County, Minnesota

Nine members of a family group who dined at a restaurant in Minneapolis on November 30, 2013 became ill with suspected norovirus. None submitted stool samples to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) Public Health Laboratory for testing. Symptoms, incubation and duration were consistent with norovirus. The group dined in a private room at the restaurant. Their meal was prepared exclusively for their group. Food items were made to their specifications and were not available on the regular menu for other patrons. All food was served family style and included a relish tray with artisan cheeses, toasted baquettes, house pickles and olives, fruit compote, au gratin potatoes, cauliflower, sweet potato fries, squash, bread and butter, salad, steak and walleye. Two cakes were prepared by a family member who not ill previous to the November 30th meal. Four controls were interviewed and the small number of non-ill controls precluded a meaningful analysis of specific food exposures. MDH sanitarians visited the restaurant on December 2 and conducted an investigation. No critical violations were found. One prep cook reported working while ill on the implicated meal date. To prevent future employees from working while ill, the restaurant agreed to screen all employees daily for gastrointestinal illness before starting their shift.
