2013 Outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis, Muskegon County, Michigan

In November 2013 staff at Public Health Muskegon County (PHMC) investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis among patrons of Pints and Quarts Restaurant and C.F. Prime, a single restaurant with two dining rooms and separate menus. Outbreak associated cases dined at one of the two dining facilities between October 30 and November 2. In total 31 dining patrons were laboratory confirmed with Salmonella Enteritis. A secondary patient with laboratory confirmation was also identified. In addition 32 probable cases who ate from the Pints and Quarts or C.F. Prime menus developed clinical symptoms compatible with a Salmonella infection. The investigation concluded that food items significantly associated with the Salmonella outbreak were various salads, Thai chicken lettuce wraps, and grilled chicken added to salad. Contamination could have occurred from cross-contamination and mishandling of food during the preparation cycle. Citrus dressing, an ingredient of the Thai chicken lettuce wrap was made with raw eggs which could have been the source of the outbreak.
