2013 Suspected Norovirus at a Wedding, Hennepin County, Minnesota

In January 2013 Minnesota public health officials investigated an outbreak of gastroenteritis among attendees of a wedding reception. Food at the reception held on January 26 was catered by a restaurant in Minneapolis. Twelve ill cases were identified. All had attended the reception. Eight had attended the groom's dinner held the night before. Two cases submitted stool specimens collected 3 days after the patients had recovered. Both were negative for bacterial and viral agents. Based on the incubation period and symptoms, investigators concluded the etiologic agent in this outbreak was norovirus. Inspectors conducted an investigation at the restaurant that catered the event. Three of the 83 employees reported gastrointestinal symptoms in the 2 weeks prior to the catered wedding events. Two employees only had cramps. One employee reported having diarrhea but had not worked since the onset of symptoms. No stool specimens were obtained from employees. This information led investigators to suspect that contamination occurred via an infected food handler although this was not confirmed.
