2013 to 2016 Multistate Outbreak of Listeriosis Linked to Frozen Vegetables

In May 2016 the CDC, FDA and public health officials in several states announced an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes traced to frozen vegetables produced by CRF Frozen Foods of Pasco, Washington. Public health investigators used the PulseNet system to identify illnesses counted as part of the outbreak. Eight Listeria specimens collected from September 13, 2013 to March 28, 2016 were reported by three states. Two cases occurred in September 2013. One case each occurred in January, February, July, October and December 2015. One case occurred in January 2016 and one case occurred in March 2016. Cases were reported in Washington, California and Maryland. All 8 ill people were hospitalized. One person from Maryland and one person from Washington died although listeriosis was not considered to be a cause of death for either person. The Ohio Department of Agriculture collected packages of frozen vegetables from a retail location and isolated Listeria in True Goodness by Meijer brand frozen organic white sweet cut corn and in True Goodness by Meijer brand frozen organic petite green peas. Whole genome sequencing showed that the Listeria isolate from the frozen corn was closely related genetically to seven bacterial isolates from ill people and the Listeria isolate from the frozen peas was closely related genetically to one isolate from an ill person. On April 23, 2016 CRF Frozen Foods recalled 11 frozen vegetable products because of possible contamination with Listeria. The recall was expanded on May 2, 2016.
