2014 E. coli O157 Outbreak Linked to Wolverine Packing Company Ground Beef

On June 20, 2014 the CDC published the final update of an outbreak of E. coli O157 involving at 12 people residing in 4 states (Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio and Missouri. The outbreak prompted a recall of 1.8 million pounds of ground beef produced by Wolvering Packing Company. Illness onsets ranged from April 22 to May 2. The ground beef products were produced between March 31 and April 18 and were shipped to distributors to sell for use in restaurants. It was not labeled for retail sell in supermarkets. In Ohio 4 patients - 3 from Lucas County and one from Portage County ranged in age from 19 years to 42 years. Three of the four were hospitalized. In Michigan five people became ill. A Kent County resident and an Ottawa County resident were hospitalized. One ill person lived in Massachusetts and one ill person lived in Missouri. Seven patients were hospitalized. There were no deaths. The outbreak was assigned CDC Cluster ID 1405MLEXH-1.
