2014 Outbreak of Clostridium perfringens in a Topeka, Kansas Correctional Facility

In June 2014 Kansas public health officials investigated an outbreak of Clostridium perfringens occurring among staff and inmates at the Topeka Correctional Facility. The outbreak was attributed to a meal served on June 18. Rotini with meat sauce was statistically associated with illness (RR=15.30, 95% CI 2.28-102.91). Eight staff and 159 inmates met the case definition as an outbreak associated case. The incubation period ranged from 4.5 to 26 hours with a median of 10 hours. One hundred individuals sought medical care from the facility medical staff. There were no hospitalizations and no deaths. Four stool specimens were positive for C. perfringens. Kansas Department of Agriculture inspected the facility's kitchen on June 24. Violations observed included inadequate hot holding temperatures, inadequate cold holding temperatures, and no backflow prevention device.
