2015 Outbreak of E. coli O157 Linked to Chocolate Dessert, Reno, Nevada

The Washoe County Health District investigated an outbreak of E. coli O157 linked to restaurant patrons who consumed chocolate mousse cake/Marquise at two restaurants in Reno, Twisted Fork and Heritage Restaurant located in the Whitney Peak Hotel. Dates of illness onset ranged from October 4 to November 13, 2015. Eleven people were hospitalized. Five patients developed hemolytic uremic syndrome. There were no deaths. Two samples of chocolate marquise were positive for the outbreak strain of E. coli O157. The dessert was manufactured by Reno Provisions, a Reno caterer. Health department investigators suspect cross contamination was the reason for the outbreak.
