2015 Outbreak of Salmonella I 4, [5],12:i:- and Salmonella Infantis Infections Linked to Pork, Washington State

In July 2015 the Washington Department of Health initiated an investigation of an outbreak of Salmonella I4,[5],12:i:- linked to consumption of pork processed by Kapowsin Meats, a Graham, Washington slaughter house. A total 192 cases of Salmonella I4,[5],12:1:- and 4 cases of Salmonella Infantis were reported by fives states. The majority of cases were residents of Washington state. Most of the ill people reported by states other than Washington had traveled to Washington in the week before their illness started. Illness onset dates ranged from April 25, 2015 to September 25, 2015. Among 180 ill people with available information 30 (17%) were hospitalized. No deaths were reported. Six DNA fingerprints (outbreak strains) were included in this outbreak investigation. Laboratory testing confirmed the outbreak strains in environmental samples collected by the Washington Department of Health from the Kapowsin Meats facility. On August 13, 2015 Kapowsin Meats recalled approximately 116,262 pounds of whole pigs. The recall was expanded on August 27 to include approximately 523,380 pounds of pork products. Exposure for many of the ill people was whole roasted pigs served at private events and restaurants. Traceback investigation identified 32 patients who consumed whole hogs for barbeque from Kapowsin Meats prior to illness onset. The CDC's national Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System laboratory conducted antibiotic resistance testing on clinical isolates collect from 10 ill people. All 10 isolates were multidrug resistant to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulfisoxazole, and tetracycline.
