2016 E. coli O157 Linked to Alfalfa Sprouts Produced by Jack & The Green Sprouts

State, local and federal public health and regulatory officials investigated an outbreak of E. coli O157 linked to consumption of alfalfa sprouts produced by Jack & The Green Sprouts, Inc. of River Falls, Wisconsin. Eleven people were infected with the outbreak strain and reported by two states: Minnesota (8) and Wisconsin (3). Two ill people were hospitalized. No one developed hemolytic uremic syndrome. No one died. Illness onsets ranged from January 17, 2016 to February 17, 2016. All 9 people interviewed reported eating or possibly eating alfalfa sprouts in the week before illness onset. State and local health and regulatory officials performed traceback investigations from 8 different locations where ill people ate or bought alfalfa sprouts. these investigations indicated that Jack & The Green Sprouts supplied alfalfa sprouts to all 8 locations.
