2016 Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 Linked to Raw Milk, Michigan

In August 2016, local and state public health and agriculture agencies investigated an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 linked to consumption of unpasteurized milk purchased through the Dairy Delight Herd Share Program. Four people shared an indistinguishable PFGE pattern (EXHX01.6470/EXHA26.4727). This strain had not been seen previously in Michigan. Two of the three cases consumed raw milk produced by Dairy Delight. A third person denied consuming raw milk but admitted that family members in the household belonged to the Dairy Delight Herd Share program. One person was "lost to follow-up" and could not be interviewed. An on-site inspection at the farm revealed several issues of concern. The short section of a pipeline that went into the bulk tank was dirty. Medications were stored in an uncovered container. A chicken and chicken feathers were found in the milk barn. Samples of raw milk taken from the bulk tank were negative for Salmonella, Listeria and Shiga Toxin E. coli.
