2016 Outbreak of Salmonellosis Associated with Kansas State Fair Food Vendor, Kansas

In September 2016 Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) and Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) staff investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Newport among persons who consumed food purchased from a vendor at the Kansas State Fair held in Hutchinson, Kansas. Meal dates ranged from September 9 through September 16. Onset of symptoms ranged from September 11 to September 16. Seven confirmed cases and 3 probable cases were identified. Confirmed cases were indistinguishable by PFGE, Pulsenet pattern JJPX01.0030. In bivariate analysis, bean burritos (Odds Ratio = 5.0, 95% Confidence Interval =0.91-26.9, p=0.05), pork burritos (OR=7.4, 95% CI = 1.65-33.1, p=0.01), and queso crunch wrap (OR=4.8, 95% CI = 1.04-22.0, p=0.06) were statistically associated with illness. KDA and the US Food and Drug Administration conducted a traceback of tomatoes, lettuce, and tortillas which were the common ingredients in the three items associated with illness. Completion of traceback did not reveal potential sources for contamination.
