2017-2018 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Linked to Coconut Tree Brand Frozen Shredded Coconut

On January 16, 2018 the CDC announced a multistate outbreak investigation of Salmonella linked to consumption of Coconut Tree Brand Frozen Shredded Coconut distributed by Evershing International Trading Company. The outbreak was declared over on February 15, 2018. Twenty nine people infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella I 4, [5],12:b- (28 people) or Salmonella Newport (1 person) were reported from 7 states. One more ill person with the outbreak strain of Salmonella I 4, [5],12:b- was reported by Canada. Illness onset dates ranged from January 9, 2017 to February 1, 2018. Six people were hospitalized. No one died. Whole genome sequencing showed that isolates from people infected with Salmonella I 4, [5],12:b- were closely related. Laboratory testing of a sample of coconut milk made with Coconut Tree Brand frozen Shredded Coconut collected from a restaurant in New York was positive for Salmonella Newport. In December 2017 a sample obtained from an unopened package of Coconut Tree Brand frozen Shredded Coconut was positive for Salmonella I 4, [5],12:b- in Massachusetts. It did not match the strain isolated in case-patients. Officials in Massachusetts returned to the restaurant where the first sample was collected and obtained more packages of Coconut Tree Brand frozen Shredded Coconut. Laboratory testing confirmed that samples from that frozen shredded coconut were positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella I 4, [5],12:b-. Laboratory testing of the coconut also identified several other types of Salmonella bacteria, including Salmonella Javiana, Salmonella Rissen and Salmonella Thompson. On January 3, 2018 Evershing International Trading company recalled all Coconut Tree Brand Frozen Shredded Coconut. The outbreak was assigned CDC Cluster Code 1708MLJKX-2.
