2017 Outbreak of Salmonella Infections Linked to Imported Maradol Papayas

Local, state and federal agencies investigated an outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to consumption of imported Maradol papayas. As of September 14, 2017 a total of 220 persons with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Kiambu, Salmonella Thompson, Salmonella Agona, and Salmonella Gaminara were reported by 23 states. Sixty-eight persons were hospitalized. One person, a resident of New York City, died. Illness onset dates ranged from May 17, 2017 to October 4, 2017. Caribena brand papayas imported from Mexico were identified as one brand linked to the outbreak. Two other farms in Mexico, Caraveo Produce and El Zapotanito, were also identified as sources of contaminated papayas. S. Kiambu and S. Thompson were isolated from samples collected from a grocery store in Maryland. The FDA tested other papayas imported from Mexico and isoalted several types of Salmonella including Salmonella Agona, Samonella Kiambu, Salmonella Gaminara, Salmonella Thompson, and Salmonella Senftenberg. On July 26 Grande Produce recalled Caribena brand Maradol papayas distributed between July 10 and July 19, 2017.
