2018 Multistate Outbreak of E. coli O26 Linked to Cargill Meat Solutions Ground Beef

In 2018 local, state, and federal public health and regulatory agencies investigated an outbreak of E. coli O26 associated with consumption of ground beef produced by Cargill Meat Solutions, Inc. Eighteen people infected with the outbreak strain were reported from four states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from July 5, 2018 to July 25, 2018. Six people were hospitalized including one person who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). One person in Florida died. The outbreak was assigned CDC Outbreak ID 1808MLEVC-1. The Pulsenet PFGE pattern was identified as EVC01.0934/EVCA26.0597. On August 30, 2018 Publix Super Markets Inc. issued a recall of ground beef products made from chuck associated with an outbreak of E. coli O26 in Florida. Traceback information indicated that cases consumed ground chuck products purchased at various Publix Super Markets. On September 19, 2018 Cargill Meat Solutions in Fort Morgan, Colorado recalled ground beef products produced and packaged on June 21, 2018.
