2018 Multistate Outbreaks of Salmonella Infections Linked to Contact with Live Poultry in Backyard Flocks

In 2018 the CDC and multiple states investigated outbreaks of Salmonella infections linked to contact with live poultry in backyard flocks. Several different serotypes of Salmonella were isolated in patients in the outbreak: Salmonella Seftenberg, Salmonella Montevideo Salmonella Infantis, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Indiana and Salmonella Litchfield. Illnesses started on dates ranging from February 2, 2018 to May 14, 2018. Of the 124 outbreak associated cases identified, 21 were hospitalized. There were no deaths. Cases were reported by 36 states. Epidemiologic, traceback, and laboratory findings linked these outbreaks to contact with live poultry such as chicks and ducklings which were from multiple hatcheries.
