2019 Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 at Red Robin, Westminster, Colorado

In July 2019 three individuals, including one adult and two children was laboratory confirmed with E. coli O157:H7 after eating at the Red Robin restaurant located at 799 W. 146th Avenue in Westminster, Colorado. Two of the 3 individuals were hospitalized. One case developed hemolytic uremic syndrome. Illness onsets for confirmed cases were June 25, June 26 and June 29, 2019. Nine probable cases were also identified through a cohort study. Illness onsets for probable cases ranged from June 15, 2019 to July 15, 2019. Tri-County Health Department (TCHD) investigators inspected the restaurant on July 9, 2019. Several food safety violations were found, prompting Red Robin management to voluntarily close the restaurant on July 10. Critical violations noted included improper employee handwashing, improper cleaning and sanitizing of food preparation surfaces, and cross contamination between raw meats and prepared foods.
