BJ's Wholesale Club Ground Beef 2002

Two children became ill after eating ground beef that had been purchased from BJ's Wholesale Club in West Nyack, New York. Leftover ground beef supplied by one child's family tested positive for E.coli O157:H7. Because the sample had already been taken out of the package and handled by the family prior to testing, the health investigators sought an unopened package for testing. Another BJ's customer provided an unopened package. This meat also tested positive for the same strain of E.coli O157:H7. Based on these results, in July, BJ's mailed a recall letter to their members about the product. Health officials later discovered another child in Bergen County, New Jersey, who had become ill with the same strain of E.coli O157:H7 and who had reportedly eaten ground beef purchased at BJ's Wholesale Club.
