Commercially Produced Mozzarella Cheese and Shredded Cheeses 1989
A multistate outbreak involving two strains of Salmonella was linked to the consumption of mozzarella cheese produced by a single, commercial, cheese maker; the reason for this contamination was not known. The contaminated cheese had been distributed to four processing plants for shredding which led to the contamination of other cheese products at those plants. The equipment at the shredding plants had not been routinely cleaned or sanitized. One hundred thirty six, culture-confirmed, Salmonella Javiana infections and eleven Salmonella Oranienburg cases were identified as a part of this outbreak.
