Contact with Young Poultry 1999
Salmonellosis was associated with having contact with young poultry (chicken, turkey, pheasant, geese, ducks) in Michigan. Approximately three quarters of the cases resided in a home where poultry was being raised. The poultry appeared to have originated from one hatchery. No other common human exposures, or poultry feed sources, were identified. Environmental samples and bird tissue samples were collected from the implicated hatchery; all Salmonella isolates underwent PFGE analysis. Seven hatchery samples (two environmental, five tissue) yielded Salmonella Infantis with the PFGE patterns matching case-patients’ isolates.
