D'Angelo's Restaurant Food Worker 2001, Hepatitis A

In October, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) was notified that a food service worker at D'Angelo's Restaurant in Swansea, Massachusetts, had tested positive for hepatitis A. The food worker was contagious while working between October 3 and October 24. Because the food worker did not have a large role in food preparation, and was noted to comply with safety protocol, a public advisory was not given. Unfortunately, by November 20, MDPH was notified of a cluster of forty six cases of hepatitis A in residents of Bristol County where Swansea lies. A case-control study found that eating at D'Angelo's Restaurant was strongly associated with risk of infection. Two additional food workers were found to have been infected with hepatitis A. On November 27, local health officials offered immune globulin to customers who ate uncooked, or cold, food prepared at the restaurant between November 14--23; approximately 1,600 persons received immune globulin.
