German Ground Pork and Commercially Prepared Raw Smoked Pork Sausage 1998

Fifty two cases of trichinellosis were identified in the state of Northrhine-Westfalia (NRW), Germany. Persons from ten cities and districts had eaten a specific brand of raw smoked sausage, however none of the people in the Mettman-Langenfeld area had eaten this sausage. The investigation indicated two simultaneous outbreaks, one caused by contaminated ground pork and the other by a commercially prepared, raw, smoked sausage. The ground pork been purchased at a supermarket that had obtained it through the supermarket chain's central supplier. Trichinella larvae were detected in a sample of this pork. A specific brand of raw, smoked, pork sausage was implicated in the other cases. The company that produced the sausage had used pork that had been obtained in Belgium, Germany, and Spain. There were no product samples available for testing. Samples from later production lots of sausage were negative for Salmonella.
