Hannaford Hamburger Ground Beef 2011

On December 16, Hannaford, a Scarborough, Maine-based grocery chain, recalled fresh ground beef products that may have been contaminated with a strain of Salmonella Typhimurium. The recall resulted from an investigation into human illness. By January 5, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 19 ill persons with an indistinguishable PFGE pattern. Fourteen of those individuals reported consuming ground beef, and twelve of those people had purchased ground beef from Hannaford stores. Seven individuals were hospitalized; no deaths were reported. All illnesses began on, or after, October 8. The Salmonella Typhimurium was resistant to several commonly used antibiotics. Hannaford made packages of ground beef by using the trimmings from steaks and roasts that had been cut in stores. The trimmings constituted about 20 percent of the ground beef in store-brand packages. Most ground beef came to the company in tubes of coarsely ground meat that was ground again in stores.
