Interactive Water Fountain at a Beachside Park 1999

The Volusia County Health Department, Florida, received reports of Shigella sonnei caused illnesses among children who had recently visited an interactive, water fountain at a beachside park. A case control study showed that entering the fountain increased the risk of illness. Also associated with illness risk were drinking fountain water and consumption of food or drink near the fountain. Shigella sonnei was isolated from the stool of five persons. Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts were identified in the stool of two persons. Investigators identified several potential opportunities for water contamination. The fountain was popular with diapered and toddler children who frequently stood directly over the nozzles. Chlorine levels were not monitored; the hypochlorite tablets that deplete after 7-10 days of use had not been replaced. The fountain reopened after a cartridge filtration and a chlorine monitor system were installed. Signs were posted to advise showering before using the fountain and to advise against drinking fountain water. Diapered children were prohibited from using the fountain.
