Unchlorinated Fill-and-Drain Wading Pool 2001

Local physicians in Iowa reported cases of diarrhea to a county health department. Shigella sonnei had been isolated from the stool samples of two persons. A preliminary investigation showed that most of the cases had recently visited a wading pool in a city park. The pool had been in existence for 60 years. It was drained each night and filled each morning with municipal water. The location was a favorite with young children. Forty five cases had waded in the pool. Twenty four cases resulted from contact with the persons who had waded in the pool. The Shigella sonnei that was isolated from case-patients were genetic matches. The Shigella was resistant to many antibiotics. Each morning before filling, the pool was rinsed with a high-pressure washer. It was scrubbed with a chlorine cleanser twice weekly. Chlorine levels were not monitored, and chlorine was not added to the pool water. One pool sample tested positive for fecal coliforms and Escherichia coli. The pool was closed.
