Viking Serenade Cruise Ship Unknown Food 1994

An outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred among passengers and workers on a cruise ship voyage from San Pedro, California to Ensenada, Mexico. Shigella flexneri 2a was isolated from at least 12 passengers. The Shigella was resistant to the antibiotic, tetracycline. Cruise-based, foodborne outbreaks involving Shigella bacteria had been reported previously.
