Wisconsin Farm Cow Share Unpasteurized, Raw Milk 2001

A cluster of five cases of Campylobacter jejuni was reported to the Wisconsin Division of Public Health in early December. After an initial investigation, the case definition was expanded to include people living in Sawyer County and the surrounding county areas who had suffered from diarrhea or abdominal cramps and fever between November 10 and December 18. Using this definition, the health department officials determined that there had been a total of 75 cases. Seventy of the cases reported drinking unpasteurized milk from the same dairy. Unpasteurized milk is illegal to sell in Wisconsin, but the dairy was using a cow-share program to circulate the milk. Patrons bought a portion of the cow in exchange for a supply of milk. Raw milk was also provided in sample size for public fairs and tours of the farm. Environmental samples taken from the farm's bulk storage tanks tested positive for Campylobacter Jejuni. These matched the strains of Campylobacter that had been isolated from ill persons. Customers of the dairy were warned not do drink raw milk. Cow share programs were prohibited.
