Wyoming Camp Water 2006

Children attending a Wyoming camp during the week of June 25, experienced symptoms of a waterborne disease. On July 1, one child was confirmed as having an infection with Norovirus. The camp remained open and more groups came through, and new illnesses occurred. The Wyoming Department of Agriculture was called in to test the water; they discovered that the water was contaminated with E. coli. An epidemiologic investigation showed the camp water to be the source of the outbreak. The camp closed on July 19 to repair the water system. The investigation into the etiology of the cases continued; stool samples were collected and analyzed. Laboratory studies showed that campers were infected with Norovirus and/or Campylobacter Jejuni. The Campylobacter strains isolated were a genetic match to one another. Water system wells were up to standard, but were 120 feet from an aging, poorly maintained septic tank. This distance was the minimum allowed in Wyoming, but site geology should have dictated a wider distance between the septic tank and water wells. Due to this outbreak the camp's water source was redefined as a "community water source." It became subject to monitoring by the Environmental Protection Agency.
